Despite all the new faces, injuries, Gundy being called out for his moods and a Dwight Howard that really hasn’t played up to potential the Magic are 14-4 and a top of the eastern conference. I can’t say the Magic are dominating teams, but they are finding ways to win high scoring games and boring ball too.
The Magic lead the league with 181 3-pointers made. They are 7th in points scored and 4th in total rebounds.
They also have a poor 1.45 assist to turnover ratio. The Magic only average 5.9 steals per game and that’s 7th worse in the NBA. I think a team of sloths would have more steals per game. The Magic’s 67.5% free throw percentage is dead last and that can be attributed to Dwight Howard’s 56.1% abilities from the stripe. No lie, I could shoot higher percentage with my eyes closed, but my 5′ 10″ frame and no hopping ability hinders my NBA chances. The Magic only have 83 blocks on the season, which is average at best.
So how are the Magic leading the eastern conference? The facts are they score more than their opponents. They average close to 100 points a game and allow under 94. Their 6.1 point differential is one of the highest in the NBA. It also helps that they have played the Nets twice, Knicks once and a few other cupcakes early in the season. After the Knicks, again, on Wednesday the Magic go on a 4 game road trip out west, so we’ll how they fair. But playing in the eastern conference has it’s advantages, because other than the Magic there are only 5 teams above .500
I hope they can keep up the 3 point shooting, but they’d be better off buttoning up other parts of their game, especially Dwight Howard free throw shooting. Maybe he should just try dunking them?
